It’s a tough job wearing the hat of businesswoman, boo – boo kisser (a.k.a mom) and military spouse…but trust me it’s possible. I have learned over my eight years of doing all three that anything is possible with planning and giving yourself a break when needed.

Here are a few tips that I use to keep it all together when you have to “get on the road” with your business:

Keep a well-organized calendar of events. Post that puppy right up on the fridge so if hubby is trying to get a feel for the month at hand there are no surprises. Also don’t be shy to tell clients and co-workers that when possible you need at least a 60-day window to plan travel times.

Don’t be shy – ask other spouses for help. The best asset a military spouse businesswoman has is other spouses! They know how tough it is to manage all that we do and they love being a part of your business in their own special way. My business would not be possible without my back up “momma crew”!

Throw the “mom guilt” out the window. Remember that your children are learning a great lesson on organization and the importance of a strong work ethic. Involve your children in your business when possible, even if it’s simply putting stamps on envelopes – they LOVE helping!

Mommy snuggle notes go a long way! Put notes out on our counter when you leave or in your children’s lunch boxes as a surprise – they LOVE mommy gifts! If you’re leaving for a few days – add a recent picture they can sleep with – and do the same for yourself! Many times those hotel rooms seem lonely and a picture on your makeup mirror can put a smile on your face as well.

Use the time away to get the job done and get some sleep! Working your tail off with no interruptions is a business gal’s best friend! Work till you can’t stand it anymore and then you’ll feel caught up when you get home – leaving you time to focus ALL your attention for a day on the little ones! They’ll see that as a treat and look forward to your next trip – knowing that a day with you all to themselves will be the reward!

Oh and also don’t forget your sweet hubby you’re leaving in charge! Make a few of his FAVORITE meals and put them in the fridge for easy grabs – he’ll love ya for it!
